Half and Half Minion Beanie Style Hat

Half and Half Minion Beanie

As an aunt I get frequent requests from my niece and nephews.  My niece requested a minion hat.  I thought "great, minions aren't difficult".  I asked her if she wanted a yellow or a purple minion, she said "both".  I then said "so you want two hats?".  She told me that she wanted one hat with half of the hat being a good minion and half of the hat being an evil minion.  Here's what I came up with.  It's a lot of color changes but I think the end result is nice.

Materials:

I hook (feel free to use a larger or smaller hook to change the size of the beanie).
worsted weight yarn in light purple (a), bright yellow (b), black, blue, brown, medium purple, white, and gray.
Tapestry Needle
Scissors

Abbreviations:

ch- chain
dc- double crochet
hdc- half double crochet
sc- single crochet
sl st- slip stitch
tc- triple crochet

Main Part of Hat:

With  COLOR A, Ch 4, join to first st with sl st to form a ring

Round 1: Ch 2 (does not count as a dc) and make 5 dc in the ring, switch to COLOR B and make 5 more dc in the ring.  Switch back to COLOR A and join to first st with a sl st (10 dc)

Round 2: Ch 2 in same st make 2 dc, make 2 dc in the next 5 stitches.  Switch to COLOR B and make 2 dc in each remaining st in round.  Switch to COLOR A and join to first st in round with a sl st (20 dc)

Round 3: Ch 2 in same st make 1 dc, make 2 dc in next st and 1 dc in the next st followed by 2 dc in the next stitch *repeat until you have a total of 15 stitches*.  Switch to COLOR B and continue the pattern but with color B (making 15 more stitches).  Switch to COLOR A and  join to first st in round with a sl st (30 dc)

Round 4: Ch 2 in same st make 1 dc, make 1 dc in next st and followed by 2 dc in the next stitch *repeat until you have a total of 20 stitches*.  Switch to COLOR B and continue the pattern but with color B (making 20 more stitches).  Switch to COLOR A and  join to first st in round with a sl st (40 dc)

Round 5: Ch 2 in same st make 1 dc, make 1 dc in the next 2 stitches and followed by 2 dc in the next stitch *repeat until you have a total of 25 stitches*.  Switch to COLOR B and continue the pattern but with color B (making 25 more stitches).  Switch to COLOR A and  join to first st in round with a sl st (50 dc)

Round 6:  Ch 2 in same st make 1 dc, make 1 dc in the next 3 stitches and followed by 2 dc in the next stitch *repeat until you have a total of 30 stitches*.  Switch to COLOR B and continue the pattern but with color B (making 30 more stitches).  Switch to COLOR A and  join to first st in round with a sl st (60 dc)

Round 7: Ch 2 in same st make 1 dc, make one dc in next 29 stitches. Switch COLOR B and make 1 dc in each of the remaining 30 stitches. Switch to BLACK and join to first st in round with a sl st (60 dc)

Round 8-9:  Ch 2 in same st make 1 dc, make one dc in each remaining stitch in round.  At the end of round 9 switch to COLOR A and join to first st in round with a sl st.

Rounds 10-15: Ch 2 in same st make 1 dc, make one dc in next 29 stitches. Switch COLOR B and make 1 dc in each of the remaining 30 stitches. Switch to COLOR A and  join to first st in round with a sl st (60 dc).

**** At the end of round 15 switch to BLACK.

Round 16: Ch 2 in same st make 1 dc, make one dc in next 29 stitches. Switch to BLUE and make 1 dc in each of the remaining 30 stitches. Switch to BLACK and  join to first st in round with a sl st (60 dc)

Round 17: Ch 1 in same st make 1 sc, make one dc in next 29 stitches. Switch to BLUE and make 1 sc in each of the remaining 30 stitches. Join to first st in round with a sl st (60 sc).  Weave in all loose ends (there will be a lot of them).

Eyes:

With Black Ch 4, join to first st with sl st to form a ring
Round 1: make 6 hdc inside the ring.  Switch to BROWN, join to first st with a sl st (6 hdc)

Round 2: ch 2, in same st make 2 hdc.  Make 2 hdc in each remaining st in round.  Switch to WHITE and join to first st with a sl st (12 hdc).

Round 3: ch 2, in same st make 2 hdc.  Make 2 hdc in each remaining st in round. Join to first st with a sl st (24 hdc).

Round 4: ch 2, in same st make 1 hdc. Make 2 hdc the next st. *repeat until end of round).  Switch to GRAY and join to first st with a sl st (36 hdc).  (leave a long tail for sewing the eye onto the hat)

Round 5: ch 2, in same st make 1 hdc.  Make 1 hdc in each remaining st in round.  Join to first st with a sl st (36 hdc)

Round 6: Ch 2, repeat round 5 but make stitches directly on top of those made in round 5.  This will make the rims of your minion's goggles thicker.

Make one more eye but switch to MEDIUM PURPLE at the end of round one. I left a long gray tail on my so I could sew the two eyes together before sewing the eyes onto the hat.

When eyes are finished sew onto hat.

Mouth:

Using BLACK surface sl st a mouth onto your hat. The mouth on the yellow side should be slightly going upwards to make a smile while on the purple side the mouth should either be flat or going slightly downwards to make a frowny face.

Teeth:

With WHITE ch 5, sc in second ch from  hook, hdc in the next chain, dc in the next, and tc in the final chain.  Fasten off and leave a long tail for sewing the tooth on top of your minions mouth (on the purple side of the minions face)

Make as many teeth as you'd like/ your minion's mouth will allow.  Feel free to use different hook sizes to make your minion's teeth larger or smaller.

Hair for the YELLOW half:

Using BLACK cut 3 strands of yarn about 6 inches long.  Using your hook attach each strand individually

to the top of the yellow half of your minion's head.  Trim to desired length.

Hair for the PURPLE half:

Using MEDIUM cut 30 strands (cut more if you'd like your minion to have more hair) of yarn about 10 inches in length.  Use your hook to attach two strands at a time to the tops of your stitches from rounds 1 and 2 (purple half only).  Fray the yarn and trim to desired length.

  1. I'm going to try to make this for my - 27 year old - daughter. She flipped when she saw it. I hope I can alter it properly to fit her. Great pattern!!

  2. Hi I know you shared this a while ago, but just wondering if you're cutting your yarn at every color change?
